On Sunday we took a trip to the Garden of Palms to share what we had learned about animals that can be found throughout the Saharan Desert and other parts of Africa. As we put our presentation up on the screen and residents began to come in, the title of our presentation began to spark conversation. Many of the residents were reminded about animals they had seen at zoos or on trips to various countries. There was already excitement buzzing in the room before we had even shared the details.
We shared about many animals, some more commonly spoken about than others, such as the lion, but others more rare, such as the mongoose. There were lots of questions about each animal, and people were able to share their own facts in some cases. The residents were also delighted by all the cute and intimidating pictures of animals big and small, and this definitely enhanced our presentation.
After finishing the presentation and answering the last questions, we went on to trivia. Residents were able to share their knowledge and show what they had learned through interesting questions. It was great to see that the residents had really gained something from the presentation and were able to apply this knowledge through their participation.
Finally, we allowed residents to take their own trip through a safari using our VR headset. At first some were hesitant to try the VR, but after one brave resident gave it a go it encouraged others to give it a try as well. They were able to get a closer look at some of the animals we had talked about in our presentation and get a 3-D view of the action seen on the Saharan. All of the residents were excited by the content and the video we shared through the VR experience, and were grateful that we had picked such an interesting topic.
